FIRST MENTION SECOND MENTION

Use a when first mentioning or introducing a noun.

Use the when mentioning a noun a second time – the noun is already identified. Both speaker and listener know which noun is being discussed.

I have a dog.      

The dog  is very playful.

The dog has a ball.      

The ball is red.

The dog likes to play a game.     

The game is fetch.

 

I throw the ball. The dog brings the ball back to me.
